School Reunion – Class of 53
A stray suggestion made over a bottle of wine!
"I wonder what our class is doing now? Let’s try to get them together for a reunion."
This is how it started, last summer. Derek Allcard and Diane Markey set out to find as many ex-pupils as possible from the class who began their education at Ebbw Vale County Grammar School in 1953. Starting with those people whose whereabouts were already known, a list was slowly built. The admissions register for the year, which Diane obtained from the archives at County Hall Cwmbran, provided a target for finding the rest.
By the use of networking, Interpol and MI5, the list was extended, until only fifteen people out of an intake of 105 were unaccounted for.
People were contacted to get feedback reaction, which was extremely favourable. The scene was set and invitations were sent out.
Last Friday, May 16th we met at Ebbw Vale Rugby Club, with 82 attendees (ex-pupils and spouses), where an excellent lunch and hospitality was provided by the club team, led by Ruth Pratten. We kicked off at 12:30 in the Scrum Bar, moved into the dining room for lunch, and people were still talking at 6 o’clock (some talking more clearly than others by this stage!)
Ex pupils attended from all over the UK, and in addition we had people who were living in Holland (William Shepherd), Germany (Merle Roczen nee Caswell), France (Alan and Pat Jenkins), and Spain (Malwyn and Carolyn Jones nee Cope) who all made the trip.
Glyn Walters has made a video of the event, and this will shortly be available in DVD form to those interested. Contact Derek Allcard at firstname.lastname@example.org).
Meanwhile you can watch excerpts from the reunion here...
