January 7th 2016: from Eric Smith
Many former pupils of EVCGS will recall the banner on the editorial of the school magazine (see below) which appeared on every edition from the earliest years, when the magazine was called 'The Ebbw Valian', until 1953. The printing block for this illustration was kept by Frank Evans and came into my hands via the late Keith Thomas, who had purchased it at an antiques fair. It is now in the safe-keeping of the Corus museum at Ebbw Vale along with other memorabilia of EVCGS.

Sad news (November 2013)
Two old pupils of EVCS, Gareth Thomas and Graham Jones, died within hours of each other, on November 7th, both having been gravely ill for some time.

Graham's funeral took place at St. James's Methodist Church, Ebbw Vale, on November 18th, with an eulogy, composed by several of his old school friends and delivered by one of them, Eric Smith. You can read the eulogy here

Several years ago, Graham contributed a very amusing retrospective of his life, which you can read here.

Ebbw Vale County School War Memorials - update
The 1939-45 book case is now in the safe and capable hands of the volunteers at the Corus Museum in the former General Offices of Ebbw Vale Steelworks. The 1914-18 bronze tablet will remain in its position in the school hall at the College Road site of the Ebbw Fawr Learning Community (formerly Ebbw Vale Comprehensive School) until the end of the summer term. It will then be removed and deposited at the Corus Museum.

Another "war-time" artefact has recently come to light. The "Dover County School for Boys Commemorative Plaque" was discovered  at the Civic Centre in Ebbw Vale and is now at the Corus Museum. By way of explanation, the inscription on it reads, "Presented by parents and old boys of the school to the Ebbw Vale U.D.C. and foster parents from Cwm to Beaufort Hill in token of great kindness."

The School Song
As someone who didn't even know there was such a thing, I was surprised to learn that a copy of the words and music is still in existence. So, for those past pupils who can't wait to start eulogising the old school in music, you can now contact Mrs Ann Morgan who has the copy, via our contact link (above).

Death of John Edgar Watkins
Former pupil John Watkins, well known in the town and beyond for his contribution to education, sport and music, passed away in February 2013. His funeral, at Libanus Church, Ebbw Vale, was extremely well attended. John's friends, and forrmer colleagues, Dilwyn Byles and Jeff Davies paid tribute to him and we publish extracts of their eulogies here.

Mr. Trevor Rees, January 2009
It was with sadness that we reported, in January 2009, the passing of Mr. Trevor Rees who died, aged 97, after a short illness. Mr. Rees taught mathematics at the school for many years until his retirement in the mid 1970s  and continued to be a well-known, popular figure, always willing to make time for a chat with former pupils and ex-colleagues as he hurried about his business in the town. His funeral took place  at West End Chapel, Ebbw Vale, on Friday, January 23rd, 2009 at 1045. You can read the funeral eulogy here.

From the Past Student Reunion Committee, 2008
"Alan Jones, who attended the school 1946 to 1954 and was Head Boy in his final year, sadly passed away late in 2007. When, in May 2004, some of the past students thought it would be a good idea to start this website to record some of the school's history, Alan willingly took on the rôle of webmaster. We, his fellow “old codgers” and future generations will be eternally grateful to Alan for his effort in producing this website."
